Eastview Cemetery

Eastview Cemetery, established by the early 1830s, is the oldest known burial ground within Alexandria. Located on a gently rising hill just east of the original town center, the cemetery provides a solemn and historic resting place for more than 600 individuals. Many early settlers of DeKalb County are interred here, alongside veterans of both the Union and Confederate armies. The gravestones reflect 19th-century funerary traditions, with intricate carvings such as clasped hands, weeping willows, and lambs, offering insight into the religious beliefs and cultural values of the community during that time.

Today, Eastview Cemetery stands as a quiet testament to Alexandria’s early days, preserving the memory of those who helped shape the town’s identity. Its serene landscape, aged headstones, and timeworn family plots offer both a place of reflection and a tangible connection to the past. Ongoing community interest in its care and preservation ensures that Eastview continues to serve as a historic landmark for future generations.
